ECREA is happy to announce the launch of a new membership service - ECREA Weekly Digest.

ECREA Weekly Digest has two objectives - to inform members about upcoming academic events that might be of interest to media and communication scholars and to support publication efforts of ECREA members either through promotion of their newly published books and journal special issues or through calls for articles and collaboration.

Unlike the constant flow of information typical of mailing lists, ECREA Weekly Digest will offer a structured weekly summary of conference calls, calls for publications, job openings and member publications. It is designed as a curated service that goes against the cacophony and the constant bombardment with information, typical of contemporary information ecology and always-on lifestyle.

Like ECREA Newsletter, the Weekly Digest is a membership-related service. As part of association’s official communication with members, it will be sent weekly on Fridays to all members with active membership.

If you wish to promote academic events, job postings or your major new publications simply email ECREA Weekly Digest editor at mailinglist@ecrea.eu. Please read the content and format requirements here.

The ECREA Executive welcomes nominations and self-nominations from individuals or from teams of three people to stand for election as the Management Committee of the Women’s Network (one chair, who must hold a PhD and two vice-chairs, one of whom must hold a PhD). Prospective teams should consider the regional and age balance of the prospective Management Committee. A candidate does not have to be an active ECREA member at the time of elections, but if elected, she/he must join the association or renew membership within two months following the election.

Please could prospective candidates or teams of candidates send an email to John Downey sections@ecrea.eu and to info@ecrea.eu in copy by Friday December 7th indicating their willingness to stand for election? The email should include a brief statement of intentions for the network and brief biograph(y)ies of the candidate(s).

Elections will take place online from December 14th to December 21st. Only members of the Women’s Network can vote. Link to online voting tool will be sent via email to all members of the Women’s Network with active membership. You can join the Women’s Network by updating your profile on the ECREA website (https://ecrea.eu/). In order to participate in the online elections, you need to join Women’s Network by December 13 at the latest.

The objectives of the Women’s Network are below. I would be happy to discuss informally with potential candidates initially through contact at the above email address.

    The Women’s Network Objectives

The objective of ECREA’s Women’s Network is to assess and develop the interdisciplinary and multicultural field of female scholarship in the context of European Communication and Media Studies. Furthermore, the Women’s Network aims to research the current situation of women in higher education and academic research in Europe, identifying differences, strengths, weaknesses and areas of good practice.

The Women’s Network intends to stimulate the exchange of ideas, and the development of expertise and insights across national borders in order to promote effective discussions and comparisons of case studies, methodologies and materials on the condition of women within the academic frame. ECREA’s Women’s Network also intends to provide added value to ECREA by pooling the member’s expertise in their respective areas, allowing for the transfer of knowledge and good practices concerning equal opportunities. From this perspective, the Women's Network will function as a channel to disseminate information about ECREA’s activities to its members.

The Women's Network will also work closely together with all ECREA sections, in order to render female scholarship more visible within the sections, and to strengthen it. At the same time, the Women's Network will refrain from developing proper research that transcends the above-mentioned focus on female scholarship in European academia.

Thirdly, the Women’s Network will function as a lobby to promote the production of research and the distribution of information on the equality of work and research conditions for women in academia. Bearing in mind that the male vision is not the dominant one, nor the only one, and that the androcentric vision is always partial, the Women’s Network intends to offer a valid alternative to the male-white-western approach when discussing issues of gender in academia. Therefore, the Women’s Network will build on a plural vision of society, as the Network welcomes, includes and grants visibility to women, young and older scholars, from every social background, ethnicity, and orientation. While promoting an inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural approach to the issue of gender in academia, the Women’s Network will provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and for comparative debates on the situation of women in academia in Europe’s diverse contexts.

The Women’s Network is also committed to transcending the boundaries between the academic and the professional worlds, welcoming members from various backgrounds and institutional contexts. The Women's Network seeks to defend equal opportunity policies, in order to empower female scholars and to inform them about their rights within the European context.

In order to support the work of female scholars, the Women’s Network needs to establish the actual situation of women within academia. Information will be provided by the members who take an active part in the discussion groups and in the publication area of the Network’s website. For this reason, the Network intends to coordinate and to publish, through its website, studies developed in different countries about the actual situation of women in the European academic context. These studies may generate recommendations for further research and for gender-fair evaluation criteria. Moreover, the Women’s Network aims to organise workshops at ECREA’s conferences and at other international conferences, on: how to publish on the web; how to submit works to journals; how to publish in English; how to work in a cooperative way; and the main problem areas discussed in our discussion groups and other network-generated topics. The results of these debates may also be published on-line, at the Women’s Network website.

As an Association seeking to protect the interests of our members and promote the highest academic standards, ECREA is concerned about so-called ‘predatory publishing’ as well as any publishing practices that display shortcomings in terms of academic rigour, peer review, and transparency.

It has been brought to our attention that the scale of this phenomenon is increasing globally, affecting a growing number of ECREA members from early career researchers to senior academics and now represents a serious threat to the integrity of many fields and disciplines.

ECREA would like to draw this issue to the closer attention of members and advise caution in both choosing a publisher for your research and in accepting editorial positions that may unwittingly legitimate dubious publishing practices. Given the complexities of this issue, ECREA will establish a task force to monitor developments, engage in debate on publishing ethics and standards in the field, and provide advice to our members.

ECREA is deeply concerned about mounting pressures on autonomy of universities in Hungary. On 12 October, 2018, the Hungarian government removed Gender Studies from the list of accredited Master Programs in Hungary. As announced in its official outlet, the National Gazette (Magyar Kozlony) it remains now as an empty line #15 in the registry. This move followed an earlier announcement of a proposed government decree to stop offering accredited Gender Studies programmes, citing budgetary limitations and lack of labour market demand for graduates as main justifications for the proposed closure.

Two universities in Hungary providing Gender Studies programs are affected directly: the state-funded Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) and the Central European University (CEU). At ELTE, the Hungarian public university's Master Program will have to close completely, after the cohort of current students graduate. All of Central European University's programs in gender studies (1 year, 2 year MA) have United States accreditation and will operate normally. CEU will however lose Hungarian accreditation on the 2-year MAs which will influence the European wide GEMMA and Matilda Erasmus Mundus Gender Studies Master Programs.

At the same time, a new study program "Economics of Family Policy and Public Policies for Human Development" planned for Corvinus University was registered without accreditation. This university is expected to become nationalized by the Hungarian government. Previously, such a course on “family studies” was mentioned by then-minister Zoltán Balog as a “properly scientific degree” to counter Gender Studies. Other prominent members of the ruling Fidesz party, including the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, have also voiced their opposition to the notion of social construction of gender.

ECREA recognizes that the mischaracterizing and questioning of the academic legitimacy of Gender Studies is not only a populist political gesture but also an anti-educational, anti-scientific, anti-democratic, anti-constitutional and anti-equality move. Through anti-genderism attacks on intellectual freedom, Gender Studies scholars are dismissed as ideologists rather than scientists. We are concerned about our colleagues based in Hungary and their contribution to European and international networks, educational and research projects as well as publishing. This not only affects the established discipline of Gender Studies at the intersections of humanities and social sciences, but also seeks to undermine the important contributions feminist theory and methodology have made to the fields of communication and media research in Europe and beyond. Gender, (and its intersectional relations with race, ethnicity, migration, sexuality, among others) is a key analytic lens for the ECREA Sections of Gender & Communication; Diaspora, Migration and the Media and International and Intercultural Communication, and is prominently on the agendas of other Sections, Temporary Working Groups and Networks.

The removal of accreditation for Gender Studies programs is regretfully merely one of the Hungarian governments’ direct attacks on academic freedom, which include mounting pressure against CEU and a 25% tax on any "external funding for activities regarding migrants", which includes educational programmes for migrants.

ECREA stands in solidarity with colleagues based in Hungary, who are experiencing infringements on their academic autonomy by the Hungarian government. ECREA also calls upon Minister of Human Capacities Dr Miklós Kásler to revise the decision and restore accreditation to the two Gender Studies programmes in question.
