ECREA has organised a free and open online webinar event on communication aspects of war against Ukraine to take place on Wednesday 9th March 14.00 -16.00 Central European Time. The event will have a roundtable format with each speaker talking for 10-15 minutes in the first instance followed by an opportunity for questions and comments.

    Speakers:

    Precious Chatterje-Doody (The Open University)
    Tanya Lokot (Dublin City University)
Lyubov Naydonova (Institute for social and political psychology of National Academy of Educational Science of Ukraine)
    Elisabeth Schimpfoessl (Aston University)
    Joanna Szostek (University of Glasgow)

Moderated by ECREA President, John Downey (Loughborough University)

    Precious Chatterje-Doody

Dr Precious Chatterje-Doody is a Lecturer in Politics and International Studies at the Open University. She taught previously at the Universities of Manchester and Birmingham, and worked for two years as a Research Associate on the AHRC-funded project Reframing Russia for the Global Mediasphere: from Cold War to 'Information War'?

Her research interests centre on questions of communication, perception and security, with a particular focus on Russia. Her work engages with the role of historical memory and identity in international relations; soft power, political communication and global media (particularly Russia's international broadcaster, RT); and critical approaches to security, including emotions and war.

    Tanya Lokot

Tanya (Tetyana) Lokot is Associate Professor in Digital Media and Society at the School of Communications, Dublin City University. She researches threats to digital rights, networked authoritarianism, internet freedom, and internet governance in Eastern Europe. She is the author of Beyond the Protest Square: Digital Media and Augmented Dissent (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021), an in-depth study of protest and digital media in Ukraine and Russia.

Tanya has worked as a journalist, non-profit consultant, and media trainer in Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia, and speaks fluent English, Russian, and Ukrainian. From 2014 to 2016 she was contributing editor for the RuNet Echo project at Global Voices. Previously, she was Assistant Professor and Head of New Media Sequence at Mohyla School of Journalism (NaUKMA, Kyiv, Ukraine). Tanya received her PhD from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. Among other things, she chairs the ECREA Media, Cities and Space Section.

    Lyubov Naydonova

Lyubov is a director of the Institute for social and political psychology of National Academy of Educational Science of Ukraine (in Kyiv), Member of Public Council of National broadcasting regulator, President of Ukrainian association of media psychologists and media educators, doctor of psychology and ECREA member.

    Elisabeth Schimpfoessl

Elisabeth Schimpfoessl is a senior lecturer at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Aston University Birmingham. In recent years she has focused on two research topics. First is research into the sociology of elites, power and social inequality, and, second, comparative research into media and journalism in post-communist Europe.

Her book Rich Russians: From Oligarchs to Bourgeoisie (Oxford University Press 2018) looks at the top 0.1 percent in Putin's Russia. In a follow-up project, a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, Elisabeth compared the practices of British and Russian philanthropists. The second strand of her research deals with post-communist journalism, which she carries out together with Ilya Yablokov from the University of Leeds. This research started in Russia and then expanded to Eastern Europe.

    Joanna Szostek

Joanna Szostek is a lecturer in Political Communication at the University of Glasgow. Her research interests centre on the role of mass media in relations between states, particularly in the post-Soviet region. Before moving to Glasgow she completed a three-year research project to investigate and explain the reception of competing political narratives among audiences in Ukraine. The project was funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellowship from the European Commission. It included an 18-month secondment to Kyiv Mohyla Academy in Ukraine and a five-month secondment to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Results from that project are published in leading international journals, including Perspectives on Politics and The International Journal of Press/Politics.

From 2019 Joanna works on a new research project investigating why levels of engagement with local, national and foreign/transnational media vary within and across ‘peripheral’ regions of Ukraine. The project, which is funded by the British Academy, is intended to shed light on how media use among ‘peripheral’ audiences can undermine and/or benefit state security, broadly defined. She holds a doctorate in Politics from the University of Oxford. Her professional experience includes several years at the BBC and many years of living and working in Russia and Ukraine. She is currently an associate fellow of the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs.

As a pan-European organisation, ECREA is appalled by the aggression of one European nation against another. ECREA strongly condemns this senseless act of violence and stands firmly behind our Ukrainian colleagues, and we encourage all members to use available platforms to influence political leaders in all European countries to find solutions to end the human catastrophe that we can now see unfolding in front of us.

The deadline for submission of abstracts for the Aarhus conference has now passed and we are delighted to announce that ECREA 2022 in Aarhus (19-22 October 2022) has received 2021 abstracts in total, a new record for ECREA.

This is a cause for celebration both as an indication of the rude health of the field in Europe and as a collective expression of optimism. The process of abstract review now beings in earnest.

In total, 2021 submissions have been received - 1711 individual submissions and 62 panels (each with five participants) to Sections, Temporary working groups and Networks. Prague, in 2016, had attracted 1986 submissions, Lugano, in 2018, had reached 1913 submissions, for 2020/2021 conference, the number was 2020 submissions.

Even though  the deadline for abstracts was extended to take account of the disruption of the omicron wave, we will endeavour to keep to the date of April 26th to inform all prospective participants of the outcome of the review process. Many thanks to the many ECREAns involved in the review process from programme chairs to individual reviewers for making this happen.

The participation confirmation deadline is May 19th.

    THE FOCUS

The ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2022 brings together members of the European research community to debate contemporary issues in media, communication, and cultural studies. The main emphasis of this summer school is on providing structural and individuated PhD-support for young European scholars, through a variety of working forms, including feedback seminars, workshops, and lectures. The summer school aims to provide a supportive international setting where doctoral students can present their ongoing work, receive feedback on their PhD-projects from international experts and meet students and academics from other countries, establishing valuable contacts for the future.

    GENERAL INFORMATION

The summer school is open to the full variety of academic work in the broad field of communication and media studies. All PhD projects within the field of communication and media studies are welcomed. We especially encourage PhD students in the middle of their studies to apply, as in our experience, participation in this phase of the study has yielded best support for the participants.

The working language of the summer school will be English; therefore a sufficient understanding and ability to express oneself in this language is expected.

Registration fee at the summer school will be:

    -       915 Euros for the ECREA members and

    -       990 Euros for the non-members of ECREA.

Participation in the summer school will include:

    -       Accommodation in single rooms for the whole duration of the summer school, including breakfast.

    -       Welcome and farewell reception and cocktail.

    -       Wi-Fi at the summer school venue.

    -       Summer school materials.

    -       Coffee in the breaks.

    -       Lunch from Monday to Friday.

The program of the summer school will include:

    -       Feedback sessions: you will receive feedback to your PhD project.

    -       Lectures, round tables, Q&As and other academic activities.

    -       Methodological workshops.

    -       Social networking and leisure activities.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The University of Cádiz will provide certificates of attendance to all those who participate during the full program. The organizers of the summer school are also seeking an opportunity to publish selected research papers based on the PhD projects presented in the summer school in an international peer reviewed journal on the field or as chapters in an edited book with a reference publisher on the field. The total number of students will be limited to 42. Participants are expected to participate in the program for its whole duration.

    GRANTS

ECREA will be awarding 12+1 grants (at least one grant, but perhaps more will be awarded to doctoral students who are members of ALAIC) for participation at the Summer School for students who are unable to otherwise raise registration and travel fee. More information on the grants is available at the ECREA WEBSITE (https://ecrea.eu/page-18213). There is a separate application and selection procedure to apply for these grants.

    APPLICATION PROCEDURE

    Stage One

When applying, each interested student is expected fill out a form on the ECREA website (https://ecrea.eu/page-18213). This application form will include:

    1. a short bio (300 words) according to the provided forms.
    2. a 500 word abstract of the PhD project.

The deadline for submitting the application is February 24, 2022. Notification of acceptance will be sent during the first half of March 2022.

    Stage Two

Students whose abstracts are accepted will be expected to provide the following documents and information in the second phase:

    1. A 10-page (3000 words) paper on their PhD project as a whole. The 10-page paper should be a report of the student’s ongoing doctoral research and not a conventional conference paper or a report of findings. Rather, it is expected that the student will briefly present the focus of the research and then take up aspects of the research process: methodological, theoretical and practical issues on which he/she would like to receive feedback. Deadline: June 30, 2022.
    2. A set of questions (maximum 1 page) with questions or problems that students would like to be discussed during the workshops, round tables and Q &A sessions. This one page needs to be part of the same Word/PDF file that also contains the 10-page paper. Deadline: June 30, 2022.
    3. By the start of the Summer School, each student has to prepare a 10-minute seminar presentation covering the main points of their work. Each student is also expected to actively participate in the discussions of their own and other people’s work, especially those of whom he/she is a respondent. In order to ensure maximum benefits of the seminars, everyone will have to read other participants papers before the Summer School begins.

    Deadline: January 24, 2022

The ICA 2022 conference theme One World, One Network‽ invites reimagining communication scholarship on globalization and networks. The use of the interrobang glyph - a superposition of the exclamation and question punctuation marks – seeks to simultaneously celebrate and problematize the “one-ness” in the theme.

ECREA will host one panel at ICA 2022 and invites the submission of panel proposals that are focused on timely and innovative topics and are diverse in terms of methodologies, theoretical standpoints and/or nationalities of the presenters. We especially encourage panel proposals which include a European perspective and a comparative research focus. This call for panel proposals is open to ECREA members of all ECREA sections and to all topics.

    Please note the following information:

Panel submissions. Panels provide a good forum for the discussion of new approaches, ongoing developments, innovative ideas, and debates in the field. If you plan to submit a panel, please submit the following details: (a) Panel theme or title, (b) a 75-word description of the panel for the conference program, (c) a 400-word rationale, providing justification for the panel and the participating panelists, (d) 300-word (max) abstract of each paper, (e) names of panel participants (usually 4-5 presenters, plus an optional designated respondent), and (f) name of panel chair/organizer. In terms of diversity, we expect a strong panel proposal to (a) include contributions of at least two different countries, (b) feature gender balance, and, ideally, (c) include not more than one contribution from a single faculty, department or school. Panel proposals need to be original and may not have been submitted to ICA before or at the same time. The format of the panel can be in person, virtual (live, not pre-recorded), or hybrid. Accepted panel presentations do not count towards the max. allowed individual paper presentations at the ICA conference.

Registering panelists. All panelists must be ECREA members by the time the conference takes place and agree in advance of submission to participate as panel presenters and to register for the ICA conference. ICA only provides a registration waiver for the panel convener, not for the other panelists.

    How to submit?

    ECREA-ICA Conference Review Committee:

    Andreas Schuck (U Amsterdam, chair)
    Christina Holtz-Bacha (U Erlangen-Nürnberg, co-chair)

Irena Reifová (Charles U Prague, co-chair)
