We are happy to invite you to participate in the ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2022 that will take place at the University of Cádiz, Cádiz, Spain, from 24-30 July 2022.

To apply and check all the information, go to SUSO page here: https://ecrea.eu/page-18213

    THE FOCUS

The ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2022 brings together members of the European research community to debate contemporary issues in media, communication, and cultural studies. The main emphasis of this summer school is on providing structural and individuated PhD-support for young European scholars, through a variety of working forms, including feedback seminars, workshops, and lectures. The summer school aims to provide a supportive international setting where doctoral students can present their ongoing work, receive feedback on their PhD-projects from international experts and meet students and academics from other countries, establishing valuable contacts for the future.

    GENERAL INFORMATION

The summer school is open to the full variety of academic work in the broad field of communication and media studies. All PhD projects within the field of communication and media studies are welcomed. We especially encourage PhD students in the middle of their studies to apply, as in our experience, participation in this phase of the study has yielded best support for the participants.

The working language of the summer school will be English; therefore a sufficient understanding and ability to express oneself in this language is expected.

Registration fee at the summer school will be:

    -       915 Euros for the ECREA members and

    -       990 Euros for the non-members of ECREA.

Participation in the summer school will include:

    -       Accommodation in single rooms for the whole duration of the summer school, including breakfast.

    -       Welcome and farewell reception and cocktail.

    -       Wi-Fi at the summer school venue.

    -       Summer school materials.

    -       Coffee in the breaks.

    -       Lunch from Monday to Friday.

The program of the summer school will include:

    -       Feedback sessions: you will receive feedback to your PhD project.

    -       Lectures, round tables, Q&As and other academic activities.

    -       Methodological workshops.

    -       Social networking and leisure activities.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The University of Cádiz will provide certificates of attendance to all those who participate during the full program. The organizers of the summer school are also seeking an opportunity to publish selected research papers based on the PhD projects presented in the summer school in an international peer reviewed journal on the field or as chapters in an edited book with a reference publisher on the field. The total number of students will be limited to 42. Participants are expected to participate in the program for its whole duration.

    GRANTS

ECREA will be awarding 12+1 grants (at least one grant, but perhaps more will be awarded to doctoral students who are members of ALAIC) for participation at the Summer School for students who are unable to otherwise raise registration and travel fee. More information on the grants is available at the ECREA WEBSITE (https://ecrea.eu/page-18213). There is a separate application and selection procedure to apply for these grants.

    APPLICATION PROCEDURE

    Stage One

When applying, each interested student is expected fill out a form on the ECREA website (https://ecrea.eu/page-18213). This application form will include:

    1. a short bio (300 words) according to the provided forms.
    2. a 500 word abstract of the PhD project.

The deadline for submitting the application is February 24, 2022. Notification of acceptance will be sent during the first half of March 2022.

    Stage Two

Students whose abstracts are accepted will be expected to provide the following documents and information in the second phase:

    1. A 10-page (3000 words) paper on their PhD project as a whole. The 10-page paper should be a report of the student’s ongoing doctoral research and not a conventional conference paper or a report of findings. Rather, it is expected that the student will briefly present the focus of the research and then take up aspects of the research process: methodological, theoretical and practical issues on which he/she would like to receive feedback. Deadline: June 30, 2022.
    2. A set of questions (maximum 1 page) with questions or problems that students would like to be discussed during the workshops, round tables and Q &A sessions. This one page needs to be part of the same Word/PDF file that also contains the 10-page paper. Deadline: June 30, 2022.
    3. By the start of the Summer School, each student has to prepare a 10-minute seminar presentation covering the main points of their work. Each student is also expected to actively participate in the discussions of their own and other people’s work, especially those of whom he/she is a respondent. In order to ensure maximum benefits of the seminars, everyone will have to read other participants papers before the Summer School begins.

    DEADLINE

The deadline for applications for the Summer School is February 24, 2022 (midnight CET).

    Deadline: January 24, 2022

The ICA 2022 conference theme One World, One Network‽ invites reimagining communication scholarship on globalization and networks. The use of the interrobang glyph - a superposition of the exclamation and question punctuation marks – seeks to simultaneously celebrate and problematize the “one-ness” in the theme.

ECREA will host one panel at ICA 2022 and invites the submission of panel proposals that are focused on timely and innovative topics and are diverse in terms of methodologies, theoretical standpoints and/or nationalities of the presenters. We especially encourage panel proposals which include a European perspective and a comparative research focus. This call for panel proposals is open to ECREA members of all ECREA sections and to all topics.

    Please note the following information:

Panel submissions. Panels provide a good forum for the discussion of new approaches, ongoing developments, innovative ideas, and debates in the field. If you plan to submit a panel, please submit the following details: (a) Panel theme or title, (b) a 75-word description of the panel for the conference program, (c) a 400-word rationale, providing justification for the panel and the participating panelists, (d) 300-word (max) abstract of each paper, (e) names of panel participants (usually 4-5 presenters, plus an optional designated respondent), and (f) name of panel chair/organizer. In terms of diversity, we expect a strong panel proposal to (a) include contributions of at least two different countries, (b) feature gender balance, and, ideally, (c) include not more than one contribution from a single faculty, department or school. Panel proposals need to be original and may not have been submitted to ICA before or at the same time. The format of the panel can be in person, virtual (live, not pre-recorded), or hybrid. Accepted panel presentations do not count towards the max. allowed individual paper presentations at the ICA conference.

Registering panelists. All panelists must be ECREA members by the time the conference takes place and agree in advance of submission to participate as panel presenters and to register for the ICA conference. ICA only provides a registration waiver for the panel convener, not for the other panelists.

    How to submit?

    ECREA-ICA Conference Review Committee:

    Andreas Schuck (U Amsterdam, chair)
    Christina Holtz-Bacha (U Erlangen-Nürnberg, co-chair)

    Dear ECREA members,

I am writing with an update on our plans for the European Communication Conference “Rethink Impact” hosted by Aarhus University between October 19 and 22 2022.

The call for papers for the conference is about to be published.

In planning for the conference the ECREA organising committee has considered a variety of options to increase the inclusivity of the conference for those who are not able or willing to travel to Aarhus for whatever reason by incorporating online elements.

The most comprehensive hybrid options substantially increase the complexity of organisation thereby increasing the costs of the conference to participants while risking the smooth running of the conference and potentially jeopardising the quality of interaction during the panels. The more comprehensive hybrid options would also make the objective of financially breaking even more difficult to achieve.

For these reasons we have developed the following approach which we believe is the best possible option at this time of uncertainty, given the constraints we are working with:

    In addition to the in person conference at Aarhus each section, network, temporary working group will organise an online event in the two weeks leading up to October 19th. They will have autonomy in terms of the organisation of these online events (number of days; scheduling of panels; degree of interactivity; the format of panels and workshops; peer review process);

    All people attending these online events will also have online access to the plenary sessions of the conference at Aarhus and to the general assembly;

    The costs of the online events will be kept to an absolute minimum (and ideally zero) in order to maximise their inclusiveness;

In the interests of reducing possible academic segregation between the online events and in person conference and in the interests of maximising participation both the online events and the in person conference are open to all. The low cost nature of the online events raises, for example, the possibility that colleagues may wish to attend as auditors rather than paper presenters.

The staggered approach to the online events and conference has additional advantages in terms of participation allowing members to potentially attend more than one event if they wish.

We will continue to monitor best practice in conference organisation and introduce more hybrid elements as and when they become viable options for ECREA.

I look forward to seeing you virtually at the online events and the in person conference in Aarhus in October 2022!

    John Downey

    Dear ECREAns,

ECREA is happy to present you the first statistics from 8th European Communication Conference (online):

    • 1185 registered participants from more than 17 countries
    • 229 parallel sessions
    • 31 bussiness meetings
    • 3 plenary sessions
    • 5 special sessions

The opening plenary session about Decolonising the curriculum attracted the interest of many - with more than 300 participants listening in on the discussions. Most popular sessions, however, dealt with the topics surrounding Children, Youth and Media; Journalism and its audiences; or Disconnection and the good life.

We do realize that spending considerable hours in front of the screens is tiresome and we really appreciate all of you who invested their time and energy into making this conference a success.

We are hoping to greet many of you in person next October during our conference in Aarhus!

After the election of the new members, Executive Board organizes the second phase of the elections, which will consist of the election of two Sections representatives, one Temporary Working Groups representative and one Networks representative - they represent the Sections, TWGs, and Networks in the Executive Board. Representatives are elected by the S/N/TWG management teams. Each member of a Management Team of a Section holds one vote for this election.

ECREA is happy to inform you that the new Temporary Working Group called Affects, Emotion and Media has been established.

The aim of the TWG is providing a platform for European media and communication scholars to engage in an interdisciplinary exchange on this multifaceted and timely topic. TWG members are interested in or work on developing theoretical concepts and methodological approaches focusing on how affect and emotions shape and are shaped by media technologies, texts, and productions in mass and social media in numerous societal contexts, such as journalism, politics, entertainment, advertising, and everyday lifeworlds. Researchers working with qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods will have the chance to exchange ideas and collaborate.

We encourage all interested ECREA members to formally join the TWG, in order to receive and circulate important updates on events and publications. Please access your profile on the intranet, click on “update profile” and select the TWG Affect, Emotion & Media. You can also follow the TWG on Twitter: @AffectTWG_ECREA.

Débora Medeiros, Karin Horsti & Manuel Menke, are excited to welcome you!
