Position  statement:

I would like to be on the Executive Board of ECREA to help in its strategic plan, implementing objectives. In recent years, communication has become one of the most important powers to change opinions and it helps us be more critical. For a few years I have been collaborating with ECREA as a researcher. I am part of different projects and organizations where scientific dissemination, neurocommunication and media literacy are fundamental.

I consider that ECREA is an international organization where transparency and activities that add and never subtract prevail. Where communication researchers meet who always contribute to and for society and the Academic Community. For all this, for your perspective and for the changes that can be made from it, I would be very excited to belong to your executive board.

Contributing to collaborative science and expanding international networks towards the Latin American continent is something I can help with. My university (Complutense University of Madrid) has signed different agreements where the final objective is to support researchers.

I would also like to contribute from an interdisciplinary collaboration that leads to the improvement of media literacy and the creativity and innovation that is required of us for future skills. A properly informed world where sustainability, inclusivity and attention to diversity are valued is essential for me, and I know it is also essential for ECREA. They are unquestionable values in all avenues of research and collaboration, involving science in social change.

My current position as advisor to the Vice-Rector for Research and Transfer of the UCM fascinates me and makes me value the importance of considering research and our work as a service to others, a help service, where my experience can contribute to all this. change. I really like working as a team and individually. Dialogue is essential between areas and cultures, and I like to do it. I really like to talk and, above all, listen. I try to be efficient and decisive when solving conflicts that may arise.

I represent international positions and belong to organizations such as the UNESCO Media Literacy Expert Committee UNITWIN Cooperation Program on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue and development of the UNESCO Research Agenda at AMI (Autonomous University of Barcelona). In addition, for years I have directed international conferences in the area of social sciences, neurocommunication, neuromarketing and health, I coordinate groups of more than 200 people (external evaluators for peer review processes), I direct two academic journals, I belong to different national and European projects, I direct the DtúAtú Spaces where we give voice to those people who contribute their knowledge related to Communication, Advertising, Public Relations, Marketing, Cinema, Photography, etc. (CONCILIUM-UCM Research Group), I am a tireless researcher where scientific dissemination and transfer occupy most of my time. I promote activities for all students and teachers. My passions, therefore, could be summarized in teaching and research. I firmly believe that we have a responsibility within society and among young researchers, among universities that need support: to create networks for the greater knowledge and benefit of all. We can create science objectively, lead and teach by generating critical thinking in a society that needs us more than ever.

I am willing to work on the task entrusted to me with great enthusiasm and responsibility.

Position  statement:

I am excited to express my interest in candidacy for the ECREA Executive Board in the upcoming election. My candidacy is underpinned by an interdisciplinary approach, extensive experience with international organizations, administrative and curricular proficiency, and a collaborative spirit fostered through my work with undergraduate and graduate students, civil society organizations, and local and international working groups.

My academic research focuses on radio studies, feminist media studies, critical media pedagogy, and intercultural communication. I am deeply committed to exploring gendered radio histories and participatory media practices for social cohesion. I utilize participatory media as a pedagogical tool and an instrument in promoting collaborations among research institutes, civil society organizations, and policymakers for peace building and conflict resolution. Currently, I am engaged in compiling a book manuscript and documentary film based on a four-year oral history project documenting the narratives of women radio broadcasters in Turkey from the 1970s.

With a PhD in Communication and an MAIA in Communication and Development from Ohio University, I bring over three decades of academic experience across institutions in Turkey and the United States. Throughout my career, I have held pivotal roles such as department chair, doctoral and master's program director, and have spearheaded innovative media curriculum development initiatives. Notably, during my tenure as PhD coordinator at Istanbul Bilgi University, our joint panels and workshops with PhD students evolved into annual Interdisciplinary PhD in Communication Conference (IPCC), starting in 2018. I have facilitated the publication of conference proceedings by my doctoral students, resulting in a thematic issue titled “Rethinking communication research methodologies” in Interactions: Journal of Communication & Culture (2020) and an edited collection titled “Doing and Being Together: Collaborations in Media Studies” by Routledge (2024).

Critical media pedagogy is central to my teaching philosophy, aimed at bridging academic knowledge with practical applications to promote social transformation. I have initiated participatory media projects and workshops with diverse groups including women, youth, and disadvantaged communities such as Roman and street children. These initiatives have empowered media students and facilitated meaningful community engagement.

My dedication extends beyond academia to include advisory roles at the Istanbul Gender Museum (https://www.istanbulgendermuseum.org/en), the Center for Intercultural Dialogue (https://centerforinterculturaldialogue.org/), and the Research and Implementation Center with Street Children at Maltepe University. I have also served as the local committee chair and international organizing committee for the National Communication Association (NCA) Summer Conference on Intercultural Dialogue taking place in Istanbul in 2009.

I believe ECREA plays a pivotal role in advancing media and communication research across Europe and beyond, promoting critical and inclusive approaches evident in its sections, working groups, and organizational structure. Since 2022, I have proudly served as Vice-Chair of the ECREA Radio and Sound Section. I also served as an instructor at the ECREA Doctoral Summer School 2022 in Cadiz, Spain and contributed as a member of the International Organizing Committee for ECREA 2012 in Istanbul.

I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to the ECREA Executive Board's mission and initiatives.

CV: HERE

Position  statement:

I am writing to express my interest in serving as a board member of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). As a Professor of Media Innovation at Tallinn University’s Baltic Film, Media, and Arts School (BFM) and the curator of our doctoral program, I bring a deep commitment to advancing the field of communication research and education. I represent a small and young research university that has, however, evolved quickly in the North-Eastern periphery of Europe. I believe it equips me, both, with a unique regional knowledge and an understanding of how to facilitate our discipline’s growth via interdiscplinary work in dialogue with Europe’s policymakers and industry stakeholders.

My research trajectory has consistently centred around interdisciplinary dialogues between innovation economics, cultural semiotics and, more recently, computer science and data analytics. I have been all these to make sense of contemporary processes of media innovation and evolution. My work has been critical but also applied and development-focused: I regularly work with media industries and policymakers in my country, Estonia as well as the EU authorities. I advise the Estonian Ministry of Culture on cultural policy, digital culture and cultural heritage. I have worked with both the EU Commission and the Council of Europe in assessing the value of research projects and developing new policy documents. In addition to raising multiple national and European research grants I have received national grants for developing digital and media culture infrastructures. I believe, all that makes me experienced in not only academic research and higher education but using disciplinary knowledge in developing critical new infrastructures, legislation and platforms. It is all such experiences I would like to bring to the board of ECREA in, potentially, contributing to the development its collaboration of European institutions and national governments.

In conclusion, my extensive background in interdisciplinary media and communications research, my commitment to academic excellence, and my dedication to collaborative development work could make me a useful candidate for the ECREA Executive Board. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to ECREA’s mission and to collaborate with fellow board members in shaping the future of communication research and education in Europe.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of serving the ECREA community in this capacity.

CV: HERE

Position  statement:

I am writing to express my interest in the role of General Secretary for the September 2024 ECREA Executive Board elections. It is with pleasure that I introduce myself as a previous Young ECREA Representative for the Section Children, Youth and Media for 2016-2020; to then being successfully elected to Vice-Chair of Children, Youth and Media Management Team for 2020-2024 and as the Section Representative on the Executive Board for 2021-2024. I have developed extensive experience in these roles while being a part of ECREA and along with this I have a robust background in academia which I believe will enable me to contribute to the goals of ECREA as a General Secretary. These roles have equipped me well with understanding the day-to-day business of the association and the required aptitude to become an efficient member of the executive team. I have honed in on my ability to forge collegial and extensive networks within ECREA in the various positions I have held and would like to extend my leadership and management skills by making a deeper contribution to ECREA by standing as a General Secretary. My vision for this role is threefold.

Firstly, if I am elected as the General Secretary, I would ensure seamless organisation and execution of daily business matters while working in a collegial manner with members at all levels of the organisation and beyond. As the General Secretary is responsible for all membership-related matters, I would look to improve and strengthen member engagement with the activities endorsed by ECREA via opening up networking opportunities that represents the breadth of research and practice of our expanding community. I understand members of our organisation are often working long hours and with heavy workloads, I would therefore prioritize implementing efficient processes of working with administrators and members that maintains transparent communication and ensures accountability.

Secondly, I would like to ensure ECREA is inclusive and welcoming. As a woman of colour I understand it is difficult for aspiring researchers with similar marginalized backgrounds and identities to develop viable peer groups, to receive support on research projects and to develop career-defining networks. My ambition as a General Secretary is to build networks of support, collaboration, solidarity for ECREA members. To do this my efforts will be placed on creating an inclusive organisation which welcomes and incorporates different modes of thought, knowledge and discourse, and encourages diversity within the community to be recognized as a key strength. A starting point would be to continue the work I have been leading on as a EDI subcommittee member. For the 2024 ECREA conference the EDI subcommittee has offered EDI conference and travel fee waivers. By working closely with the incoming Treasurer I hope to continue building on the opportunities we can create to increase the participation of members by providing financial support. By holding feedback sessions with current members it has become clear future work of ECREA needs to address creating safe feedback mechanisms for our members to voice any concerns, form teams/committees which reflect the diversity we aim to achieve at the conference, use our positions to invite and include diverse participants and speakers and continue developing practices that promotes accessibility and inclusivity. As a General Secretary I will work to address these areas of work.

Finally, I have seen ECREA has grown from strength to strength with each conference it has organised. I would commit myself to ensuring continuous improvement by using data driven decision making, strategic planning that aligns with the goals and values of the organisation and stays responsive to emerging trends and challenges in the field. By adopting the above vision, I believe as a General Secretary I can lead ECREA with a positive team culture that will ensure future work is impactful, highly regarded in our academic community and inclusive.

Thank you for considering my expression of interest.

Position  statement:

I would be delighted to serve as an ECREA Executive Board Member. My main emphasis would lie in supporting the work of TWGs and Sections in order to maintain, diversify and also question what media and communication research and education today and in the future should be.

I have experience at ECREA in setting up with colleagues a TWG and later a Section in Visual Cultures, as well as experience in chairing both. Co- operation within ECREA, but also with colleagues in other academic venues has been central for advancing research and education work in these areas. I am always eager to learn new ways of cooperation and collaboration, but also happy to share what I have learned so far.

Position  statement:

The European project today faces ongoing challenges to its core values, but is also experiencing a time of potential expansion, which brings new opportunities for reimagining Europe and its future. The higher education and academic community plays a central role in upholding shared European ideals, fostering collaborative exchanges across borders and divides, and sustaining and nurturing cross-national networks of cooperation and understanding.

I am applying to serve as a member of the ECREA Executive Board as I believe my expertise and connections can help advance key ECREA goals to bridge divides across the European academic community and expand benefits and opportunities for all members of the scientific and educational networks. As a native of Ukraine with diverse experiences of working in both global and European academia, I am especially passionate about supporting greater access for CEE scholars and students and facilitating their visibility and contribution in the greater European academic community. If elected, I will primarily work to advocate for further ECREA efforts to overcome conceptual, disciplinary and linguistic boundaries between the East and West of Europe, and to give greater voice to communities and scholars who have traditionally been excluded from the mainstream – mostly Western and Anglophone – academic life. I will also work to bolster engagement with academia, policy makers and industry on strengthening supports and funding opportunities for scholars at risk, especially those working in precarity and impacted by conflicts, wars, authoritarianism and democratic backsliding.

CV: HERE

    Position  statement:

Hereby I announce my candidacy for a member of ECREA executive board.

My primary motivation for the candidacy is simple and straightforward: The next ECREA conference will be hosted by Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, and as a member of this university, I intend to serve as a strong connection between the board and the organizational team of the conference.

Moreover, I believe that I can serve ECREA quite well with my experiences and skills of a mediocre academic in his mid-forties who is still in passionate relationship with the field <of his heart. During more or less two decades in academia I had an opportunity to design and chair study programs in the field of media and communications, to take part in organizing multiple international conferences, to chair a department, to be a member of various teams and boards. And now I would love to be more profoundly useful for ECREA.

Since my direct experience with administration processes at ECREA is currently rather limited, I do not intend to candidate for statutory positions.

    Dariya Orlova

National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Ukraine)

    Runs for position:  EB member

    CV: HERE

    Position  statement:

I am an Associate Professor at the Mohyla School of Journalism, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, where I have been teaching and conducting research on media and journalism in Ukraine for over a decade. My research projects have explored transformation of media in Ukraine, journalists’ professional identity and practices, war reporting experiences, as well as media use among border populations in Ukraine. I was a visiting scholar at the Center for Media at Risk, Annenberg School for Communication (University of Pennsylvania) in 2022-2023 and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford University’s Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies in 2016. I have been lucky to be part of collaborative research projects and networks involving colleagues from different European countries, including Worlds of Journalism Study and European Journalism Observatory networks.

My experience of collaborations and exchange with colleagues from other European countries has been truly both formative and transformative for me. I have discovered a lot about the field of communication research itself, but also about the power of exchange of knowledge, which broadens and enriches our perspectives. Appreciation of the value of scholarly exchange and collaboration motivate me to suggest my candidacy for the membership in the ECREA Executive Board. My motivation is also driven by the awareness that scholarly exchange and collaboration beyond borders are in deficit for many fellow researchers in Ukraine, and other countries too. I still remember my awe when I first attended ECREA in 2016. The whole new world opened to me as an early-career Ukrainian media scholar at that time. This world, however, has remained way too distant for a great majority of my colleagues in Ukraine. This has to change for the benefits of scholars across diverse European countries and scholarship as such.

I would like to become a member of the ECREA Executive Board in order to contribute to bridging communities of researchers from countries that often lack resources, like Ukraine, with their counterparts from other European countries. I have served as a member of ECREA Ukraine Task Force and I have witnessed its first achievements, with more and more Ukrainian scholars joining the ECREA. Yet, more needs to be done to stimulate real integration. I believe that such integration is crucial not only for scholars from Ukraine and other countries that lack voice and representation in European networks. It is crucial for scholars from all European countries. We need to share knowledge with each other, we need to work collaboratively, we need to bring our diverse, yet well-informed and honest perspectives to guide our pursuit of knowledge and understanding, especially in challenging times like today.

While it is always a big challenge to find responses to crises in turbulent times, as a Ukrainian scholar witnessing war I came to believe that communities and networks are essential parts of responses. As a member of the ECREA Executive Board I will do my best to contribute to the strengthening of the ECREA community and integrating those whose voices have been seldom been heard yet.

    Tereza Pavlickova

London College of Communication, University of the Arts (UK)

    Runs for position:  EB member

    CV: HERE

    Position  statement:

My academic life has been closely intertwined with ECREA, which has provided me with a supportive community of amazing, inspiring and diverse scholars, mentors and colleagues.

ECREA as an organisation has been instrumental in my academic identity and journey.

Attending the ECREA Summer School in 2012 in Ljubljana, I met great mentors as well as amazing peers who are now well-established academics and mentors themselves. I then served as YECREA vice-chair (2016-2018) during which time I was elected as a Network representative to the ECREA Executive Board and had a chance to contribute to the work and direction of the organisation. I co- organised the YECREA round table panel at the ECC2018 Lugano on “The Challenges and Opportunities of Open Access from a Young Scholar’s Perspective” and presented at the Women’s Network’s panel on gender-related issues and challenges in academia and how to address them as a community.

Undoubtedly, a key role of ECREA is to facilitate space for knowledge exchange and collaboration among the diverse European (and beyond) academic community, sharing and discussing the latest research findings, and challenging the ways we problematise and theorise contemporary media and communication phenomena and practices. Yet no matter what thematic section we signed up for, no matter what research methodologies we employ, many of us reflect on the future of academia and academic research: questions around academic identity; questions of conditions of knowledge production, its distribution, access to it, as well as its impact; the neoliberal pressures on education and research; the different threats to academic freedoms across Europe and the rest of the world; working conditions and precarity in academia; and questions around the role of AI in knowledge production, research, teaching, and assessment.

More than ever, ECREA’s important role is to provide a space of care for the community, initiating discussions and offering guidance and support in relation to the issues and questions of the academic life as such. I wish to contribute to the efforts to build and sustain an organisation that has a strong voice, but which also listens.

As a Czech living and working in London, a woman, and mother, but also a mature yet early-career academic, who has benefited from ECREA’s continuous support, I see my candidacy as a way of saying thank you and as a form of giving back to peers and colleagues, people who might have similar experiences. Most importantly, my own complex positionality provides me with recognition of the nuances of these seemingly shared lived experiences. Hence, as an ECREA Board member I would like to contribute to the institutional efforts to form a community that thrives on its diversity, while playing a significant role in raising and addressing these pressing questions, providing structural support for the shared issues and problems of what it means to be a media and communication scholar, researcher, and teacher.

    Pille Pruulmann-Vengerfeldt

    Malmö University (Sweden)

    CV: HERE

Runs for position: EB member, ECREA President

    Position Statement:

I have been active in ECREA since its inception, when I was part of the management team for Young Scholars Network. I have also been active in charing and co-charing Audience and Reception studies network. I have been active in European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School since 2005 as organizer, teacher, advisor and since 2017 also as international director, a position which I will give up in 2024.

Since 2021, I have been part of the ECREA executive board, and since 2022, I have been part of the ECREA bureau as a treasurer for ECREA. As an EB member, I have been active in methods and summer school sub-committees and recently also in the work of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) sub-committee.

My work within ECREA has always been driven by a desire to extend the organization's reach, but more importantly, to find meaningful ways to support our members. I believe in the value that international organizations like ECREA can bring to their membership, and I am committed to showcasing this. For me, ECREA is a platform for networking, a community to belong to, a space for continuous learning and expanding horizons. However, it is also a community of friends and colleagues who can be reached through the membership channels, where the members are visible and there for each other. ECREA is about increasing the visibility of media and communication research in relation to other subjects, but it is also about demonstrating that our disciplinary boundaries are open, welcoming and inclusive.

I would like to run for the position of President as I believe that I have experience in the diversity of ECREA structures. I know the daily work of the organisation and have been closely involved in recent years’ work with updating the statutory documents, broadening our mandate and seeking ways in which we can have a wonderful organisation that is relevant to its members. My wish for the presidential role is to be able to focus on the academic, disciplinary and interdisciplinary questions that bring ECREA members together and, if possible, focus less on politics.

    ANDREAS SCHUCK

    University of Amsterdam (Netherlands)

    Runs for position: EB member

    CV: HERE

    Position  statement:

My name is Andreas Schuck and I am Associate Professor for Political Communication & Journalism at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I am applying to become member of the ECREA Executive Board (2024-2028) at the next ECREA General Assembly organised at the 10th European Communication Conference on September 26th 2024.

I am currently elected member of the ECREA Executive Board (since 2021) and am applying for another term. In this past term, I have been a member of the Equality, diversity, inclusion (EDI) subcommittee, Chair of the Reducing Environmental Impact subcommittee and served as ICA- & IAMCR-liaison officer. In these roles I have been (1) working on more effective tools to evaluate both current and prospective measures ECREA is implementing in support of promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion and helped to implement the first EDI-related grants for the ECC2024, (2) I have reviewed existing approaches of our and other organizations to reduce their environmental impact and worked on suggestions for improvement, and (3) have implemented an open call for all ECREA members for ECREA-sponsored panel proposals at the conferences of our partner organizations in an effort to arrive at more open and transparent procedures.

My own connection with ECREA goes a long way back - the first ECREA conference I participated in was in Amsterdam, back in 2005, as a PhD student. From 2016-2021 I have been elected Chair of the ECREA Political Communication section (re-elected in 2018). In this time, and even more so during my time as elected member of the ECREA Executive Board since 2021, I got to know ECREA as a vibrant and engaging organization which plays an important function in connecting researchers from different parts of Europe and beyond. One prominent example that comes to mind is the Ukrainian scholar taskforce the current ECREA Executive Board has set up. I see ECREA as an international community and active forum for important scholarly exchange, providing a European perspective on many important research topics in our field. It brings together an exciting breadth of expertise and regional diversity, which is perfectly suited to tackle some of the most important current research challenges together.

As a member of the next ECREA Executive Board I would like to continue my current work on supporting and promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in our organization and work on the implementation of concrete initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of ECREA. Furthermore, I would like to strengthen the dialogue between the different ECREA Sections and actively support the Sections to explore connections and foster exchange across groups. Undoubtedly, many of the most important communication challenges of our time are best tackled together, with topical and methodological expertise from different (sub-)fields, opening up new opportunities for innovative research and new future co-operations. For this, it is necessary to also know more about our respective research agendas, our projects and plans. Helping to explore the potential for such connections, looking for opportunities to cooperate across groups, and helping to connect researchers from different sections, fields, or geographic areas, and thus providing an active forum for such exchange, is something I want to actively support and am excited to work on as a member of the next ECREA Executive Board.

    CV: HERE

    Position  statement:

I would like to present my candidacy for the ECREA Executive Board - for the statutory position of vice-president of the European Communication Research and Education Association.

Drawing on my experience I would like to continue my service with ECREA. As an ECREA Bureau member I would like to contribute to its work by strengthening the ECREA entities – Sections, Networks and Temporary Working Groups – supporting them and promoting their activities in the association and beyond. Being committed to European values and aiming at high academic standards I would like to contribute to building a strong community of media and communication scholars. Finally, along with the local organisers, I am happy to devote my time and energy to the organization of the next European Communication Conference.

As a member of ECREA I have previously been involved and engaged in management of its entities: 2016-2018 I was a vice-chair of the Communication and the European Public Sphere Temporary Working Group (organising seminars and workshops, e.g. in Krakow in 2017) and 2018-2021 I was a vice-chair of the Central and East-European Network. Since 2021 I have been acting as a chair of the CEE Network (re-elected in 2022). I have been involved in the work not only of the Network (e.g. by co-organising a seminar ‘Political Communication Research in Central and Eastern Europe’ with IPSA in 2022 and a thematic panel ‘Pandemic and lockdown as spiritus movens of the technological revolution in communication’ at the ICA Regional Conference in Warsaw in 2024) but also contributed to different sections, including: Mediatisation, Organisational and Strategic Communication, as well as International and Intercultural Communication. In December 2022 I joined the ECREA Executive Board as a Networks’ representative. I have been active there in the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) sub-committee (e.g. facilitating greater inclusion of scholars at the ECC 2024 conference by providing EDI grants). While working in the EB, I also took part in daily work related to the preparation of necessary documents and I have used my experience and knowledge of how ECREA operates to enhance consultations with scholars from different backgrounds and at various stages of their scientific development and professional careers.

In sum, I feel that I have the experience, expertise and motivation to take on the role and continue to contribute to ECREA’s valuable work. Thank you for considering my candidacy.
